How to cook Shark Fin Soup

Originating from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), this traditional Shark fin soup is often considered a symbol of wealth and prestige and is commonly served at special occasions such as weddings, banquets, and important celebrations.

Here’s a simple recipe of the shark fin soup:

Ingredients:

1 cup shark fin or imitated shark fin

4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

1 cup cooked and shredded chicken

1 cup cooked and peeled shrimp

1 cup sliced mushrooms

1 cup julienned carrots

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon oyster sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Begin by bringing chicken or vegetable broth to a simmer in a pot.
  2. Add imitation shark fin or a suitable seafood substitute to the simmering broth, following the package instructions for cooking until tender.
  3. Introduce shredded chicken, cooked shrimp, sliced mushrooms, and julienned carrots to the pot.
  4. Incorporate minced garlic, soy sauce, and oyster sauce into the mixture. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Allow the soup to simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes until all ingredients are heated through.
  6. Taste and make any necessary adjustments to the seasonings.
  7. Serve the hot soup, garnished with chopped green onions.
